  The Wave

Telecommunications for your Commodore

Now you can enjoy graphical web browsing on your Commodore 64 or Commodore 128. "The Wave" makes this all possible.

NOTE: The Wave requires a Commodore 64 or 128 running Wheels (GEOS upgrade) with a SuperCPU and at least 4mb of SuperRAM memory.

The Wave Beta Test Page

If you're looking for the so-called "release" version of The Wave,
you're on the wrong page. Click Here

On the other hand, if you'd like to try out the latest version, stick around. The latest version is always a beta test version. As soon as the most recent beta test version is proven to be stable and ready for public use, it will become the latest public release version. You can tell which is a public release version and which is a beta test version by checking the version number in the info header. Beta versions always begin with a B and public versions begin with the usual V.
The Wave began life as version B1.0 and slowly progressed up to B2.7. After some testing, this was finally a pretty good version so it turned into V1.0 and was made available for downloading. Now you can download B2.9 here to try out. Perhaps after a few more B versions, I'll be ready to release The Wave V1.1.

As with any beta test program, you're taking risks. But if you know my style, I'm not one to rush and get the latest bug-filled version out for the world to see. Even my beta test stuff gets its "known" bugs fixed before I release it.

What you will need

Before using this set of beta files, you'll first need the complete V1.0 release. If you've already got it up and running, you're all set. If not, then GO GET IT.

Since we're beta testing, we aren't using the fancy installer utility. But you know how to copy files, so installation should be a breeze. This beta test upgrade consists of just one file for each system. You'll need Wave64 or Wave128. Delete the corresponding V1.0 files (or the previous beta B2.8 files) and copy these new ones in their place.

What you get with this (B2.9) release

Email support is in the works but I had to disable it in this release since the user interface still isn't ready for public use. However, I felt that other improvements in the browser warranted getting this release out for everyone to use.

  • The browser displays tables much better now. It's still far from perfect, but it's better at handling some of the the many mistakes that HTML coders seem to make.
  • The browser can also display borders around tables now for those sites that use borders.
  • Font handling is improved. There was a bug that prevented the correct fonts from being used in many web pages. The same bug also kept the correct font sizes from being used in some cases.
  • The SYSTEM64 and SYSTEM128 files have now been eliminated. The new Concept+ programming package that I'm using to code The Wave with allows me to more easily create larger and more complex application files. So, I've been able to put all the code into one file for each version. You only need Wave64 or Wave128 now. Of course, you still need all the other support files such as the fonts.
As always, there are little fixes and improvements that I can't even remember. You'll just have to try it out and see if it seems smoother and better to you overall.

If you see something wrong that
I need to know about, please send me an email.
